SUMMARY:Reproductive freedom and justice in the context of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision
DESCRIPTION:Special Events Series\, October 23 and November 20 at 6:00pm in the East Classroom: \nCentral’s On the Wisdom Path: perspectives\, narratives\, and conversations “Dobbs” Series\, October 23 and November 20 at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary: Reproductive freedom and justice in the context of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. This series brings a sequence of guest speakers on constitutional law and Christian ethics in the context of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. \nSunday\, November 20\, 6:00pm in the Sanctuary The Reverend Rebecca “Toddie” Peters\, Presbyterian minister and Professor of Religious Studies at Elon University\, joins us in person in the Sanctuary on the ethics of reproductive justice and her book\, “Trust Women: A Progressive Christian Argument for Reproductive Justice”. The legal and ethical concept of abortion has historically been narrowly tailored as an “allowance” provided to women on the basis of “justification” based on the circumstances leading to the need for an abortion. However\, the more fundamental\, “co-creation” ethic might be found in a reproductive justice paradigm\, in which the first principle is about the primacy of each and every woman's personal judgment regarding her ability to have children\, to not have children\, and to raise the children she has. In the unique and singular context of an individual’s life\, the moral consequences of having a child can be equal to\, if not greater than\, the moral consequences of having an abortion because the moral requirements of motherhood are so enormous. \n.
