SUMMARY:Zikr Dance Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Zikr – the remembrance of God “Remember” is too pale a word for zikr\, which has now acquired a large number of associations in our religious literature\, especially Sufi literature. In its verbal signification it implies: to remember\, to praise by frequently mentioning; to rehearse; to celebrate or commemorate; to make much of; to cherish the memory of as a precious possession. In Sufi devotions\, zikr represents both a solemn ritual and a spiritual state of mind or heart\, in which the devotee seeks to realize the presence of God. Thus there is zikr of the mind and zikr of the heart. For some the one may lead to the other\, but in many cases the two may be simultaneous. There is also a subtler distinction\, between the zikr that is open\, and the zikr that is secret\, corresponding to the two doors of the heart\, that of the flesh and that of the spirit. \nThe Zikr Dance Ensemble offers a spectrum of works that include transcendent dance rituals from many different ancient world cultures throughout history along with original and contemporary dance/theatre realizations. The company’s purpose is to offer performance experiences of spiritual atonement for both participants and audiences alike which are both theatrically engaging and educational and that also connect to numerous organizations dedicated to both promoting spiritual tolerance and multi-cultural understanding for the entire community. \nThe company’s singular artistic focus makes it totally unique among professional dance companies in the United States\, and its relatively small size and flexibility and adaptability regarding performing spaces makes it an ideal fit for not only major presenters\, but also for college dance departments\, museums\, churches and other smaller or unusual venues.\n​\nThe dances in performance are supplemented by stunning slide projections and visual effects\, completing a multi-media experience that audiences and presenters alike have found to be both visually and artistically stimulating as well as intellectually captivating.

DESCRIPTION:Our annual Educational Masterwork Collaboration returns having reached hundreds of student musicians across the Denver metro and Northern Colorado areas over the past five years. This is some of the most important work CRS undertakes\, connecting with student musicians and supporting music educators. This season we are thrilled to bring to life Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo. \nDan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text\, “O be joyful in the Lord\, all ye lands\,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. Movements include liturgical Latin\, intertwined Hebrew and Arabic\, Mandarin Chinese\, Zulu\, Spanish\, Song of the Earth (untexted)\, and a closing movement combining several of these languages with English.
