SUMMARY:Denver Gay Men's Chorus presents Winter Soulstice
DESCRIPTION:Like the Winter Solstice\, hinting at the light to come and the birth of new opportunities\, Winter Soulstice celebrates the holiday season and DGMC’s new Artistic Director\, Johnny Nichols\, Jr.\, with music that honors the earth\, celebrates diversity\, and dances to the festive rhythm of soul music. \nThe Denver Gay Men’s Chorus has been an LGBTQ catalyst for change through musical excellence since its founding in 1982. With more than 300 concerts during its 42-year history\, this 140-member ensemble is one of the premier gay performing arts organizations in the Rocky Mountain Region. Through its diverse and socially charged programming\, DGMC’s reimagined choir concerts entertain\, educate\, inspire\, and empower audiences to foster acceptance and tolerance throughout the greater Denver area and along Colorado’s Front Range communities. \nDGMC has performed in Denver and around the U.S. in acclaimed concert halls\, including Boettcher Concert Hall\, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House\, Gates Hall\, the Paramount Theatre\, the Red Rocks Amphitheater\, and Carnegie Hall. Additionally\, the chorus has delivered groundbreaking performances at Coors Field\, in the U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel\, and on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol as part of inaugural festivities for Governor Jared Polis. DGMC has traveled to 12 states\, the District of Columbia\, and Canada and has made joint appearances with several gay men’s choruses in major U.S. cities \nIn 2023\, DGMC was among the first GALA choruses to present Disney PRIDE\, a musical celebration of LGBTQ life\, love\, and perseverance. \nIn addition\, they have premiered new-commissioned choral works from acclaimed composers such as Andrew Lippa\, Nathan Hall\, Alan Shorter\, James Deignan\, and Craig Carnahan. Guest artists that have performed alongside DGMC include Ann Hampton Calloway\, Margaret Cho\, Alan Cummings\, Yvie Oddly\, and Diane Schurr. DGMC has performed twice with the Colorado Symphony. \nIn the name of advocating for a better tomorrow\, DGMC has collaborated with The Matthew Shepard Foundation\, the LGBT Community Center of Colorado\, the Colorado AIDS Project\, One Colorado\, the Boulder County AIDS Project\, Out Boulder County\, the Colorado LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce\, PFLAG Boulder County\, and the It Gets Better campaign. DGMC has helped raise awareness of homelessness and housing insecurity issues\, pioneered an educational outreach program to nurture safe learning environments\, and continues to support anti-bullying efforts in Colorado schools. \nDuring its 40th anniversary season\, DGMC collaborated with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance\, a first for both organizations. Aurora’s Rangeview High School Choir joined DGMC for the Colorado premiere of “The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed\,” a powerful multi-movement piece inspired by the last words of seven unarmed black men.   \nDGMC’s future is full of endless possibilities as its mission statement\, “building community through music\,” drives its imaginative motivation for success! \n

SUMMARY:Socks of Love for Heartbeat Denver Working Men’s Shelter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for worship on December 17 at 10:30am\, for an annual Central Christmas tradition\, featuring your favorite carols\, a heartwarming pageant\, and acts of kindness that define the spirit of the season. \nImmerse yourself in the true meaning of Christmas through worship and timeless carols. Our Christmas pageant promises to be a joyous spectacle\, continuing the rich tradition that has become an integral part of our community’s celebrations. \nStay for cookies\, conversation\, and a special service project that has become a cherished tradition. Bins will be in the Narthex beginning the week of November 26 to collect donated sample-sized toiletries (toothpaste\, toothbrushes\, shampoo\, conditioner\, and soap). \nThis year\, we aim to stuff 120 pairs of warm socks\, creating thoughtful care packages for the residents of the Heartbeat Denver Working Men’s Shelter. The bins will remain open through the 17th\, allowing everyone to contribute to this meaningful project. \nParticipating in the service project is a powerful way to feel the love that comes from helping one another. Let’s create a ripple effect of kindness that extends beyond our community\, making this Christmas a time of connection and compassion. \n \nThis Christmas season\, make our tradition more meaningful by joining us for worship\, carols\, and acts of kindness that spread love to our neighbors at the Heartbeat Denver Shelter. Visit the Narthex starting November 26 to contribute to the service project\, and together\, let’s make this festive season a time of connection\, compassion\, and community spirit.

SUMMARY:Central City Opera presents: AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS
DESCRIPTION:A holiday event for audiences of all ages. Performed with a full orchestra.\nThe story of a magic star\, a shepherd boy\, and how unselfish love can work miracles.\nAmahl and the Night Visitors is a family-friendly opera and has been enduringly popular since its premier in 1951. Commissioned by NBC as the first opera written for television\, Amahl and the Night Visitors debuted on December 24\, 1951 becoming the first network television Christmas special to become an annual tradition. Composer Gian Carlo Menotti drew inspiration for the opera from Hieronymus Bosch’s The Adoration of the Magi\, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and from his childhood in Italy where gifts were brought at Christmas by the Three Kings instead of Santa Claus. \nAmahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of Amahl\, a shepherd boy who has a propensity to tell tall tales\, and his mother. Amahl’s most recent story is about a star with a tail that moves across the sky like a chariot on fire. When three splendid strangers knock on the door and ask to rest in their tiny home\, Amahl is thrilled and fascinated. When the visitors describe the miraculous child they are seeking\, both Amahl and his mother are moved to give reverence to the child as well. Their humble faith conjures a miracle.
