The Word in Scripture

Enter his (God’s) gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise.  Give thanks to him, bless his name. Psalm 100:4

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

Reflection

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  I was born on Thanksgiving and every few years my birthday falls on that day.  I also enjoy being thankful with family and friends around the table sharing a delicious meal.  Most of us have much to be thankful for.

Coming to worship together on Sunday mornings is a way of expressing our thanks to God as well as other ways such as showing kindnesses to others.  My Aunt Emma lived to be over 100 years old and was in a nursing home the last years of her life.  Every time we visited her, she would say, “I have so much to be thankful for.”  I think that her positive attitude was a major contribution to her long life.  She was a role model for me for aging gracefully with a Christian spirit.

Our culture seems to jump from Halloween to Christmas with Thanksgiving playing a minor role.  During this Thanksgiving season, may we all remember the many blessings from God for which we are thankful and show our thanks in tangible ways such as helping in one of Central’s mission projects and/or daily prayers for people in need locally, nationally and internationally.  What are some ways for you?

Even in times of loss and tragedy there is usually something for which to give thanks especially when people help each other.  This was very evident during the recent national disasters of hurricanes, fires and gun violence.

Prayer

Dear God, Help us to have thankful hearts and show your love to others.  We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands and feet.  Please guide us in all we say and do. We give thanks to you through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intention

Make a list of things for which you are thankful.  Share the list with a family member and/or friend. Ask your partner to share her/his list with you.
Write down some tangible ways that you express your thanks to others.  Is this satisfying to you or could you make some changes?
Write or call someone, or more than one person, you are thankful for and tell them what you appreciate about them.
